                      - 1540: The Society of Jesus (Jesuits) was founded by Ignatius Loyola
                        and Pope Paul III approved the first outline of the Jesuit Order's
                        organization.
                      - 1777: In the Revolutionary War, Gen. Washington was defeated by the
                        British at the Battle of Germantown.
                      - 1825: The world's first public railway to use steam locomotives
                        was inaugurated when George Stephenson's "Active" pulled a train
                        along the track in England.
                      - 1854: The steamship Arctic sank with 300 people on board.
                      - 1855: George F. Bristow's "Rip Van Winkle," the second American
                        opera, opened in New York City.
