Liberty and ending America's 132-year hold on the trophy.
- 1984: China and Britain reached an agreement under which Hong Kong
would revert to Chinese sovereignty in 1997.
- 1989: Soviet Foreign Minister Eduard Shevardnadze called for total
destruction of Soviet and U.S. chemical weapons. Vietnam withdrew
its troops from Cambodia.
