                - 1522: Juan Sebastian Del Cano completed the first circumnavigation
                  of the world; the last of Magellan's fleet returned to Spain.
                - 1620: The Pilgrims left Plymouth, England, on the Mayflower.
                - 1628: The Puritans landed in Salem, Mass.
                - 1666: The Great Fire of London ended after destroying much of the
                  city in a conflagration that began Sept. 2.
                - 1716: The first lighthouse was built in the U.S. in Boston.
                - 1776: The first submarine attack happened when the first American
                  sub attacked the British warship Eagle in New York harbor.
                - 1819: Thomas Blanchard patented the lathe.
                - 1839: The Cherokee Nation was formed.
                - 1866: Frederick Douglass became the first American black delegate
                  to a national convention.
                - 1899: Carnation processed its first evaporated milk.
                - 1901: President William McKinley, the 25th president, was shot by
                  anarchist Leon Czolgosz at the Pan American Exposition in Buffalo,
                  N.Y. The president died eight days later.

                - 1965: India invaded West Pakistan in an attack intended to prevent

                - 1966: South African prime minister since 1958, Henrik Frensch
                  Verwoerd was killed in parliament by Dimtric Tsafondas, a
                  parliamentary messenger.
                - 1970: Palestinian guerrillas hijacked four airliners traveling to
                  New York from Europe.
                - 1997: Diana, Princess of Wales, killed in a Paris car crash Aug. 31,
                  was buried on an island at her ancestral home, Althorp House, near
                  Great Brington, England.
