               - 1618: Sir Walter Raleigh, English adventurer and a favorite of
                 Queen Elizabeth I, was executed in London for treason.
               - 1682: William Penn landed at what is now Chester, Pa.
               - 1814: The first steam-powered warship, the USS Fulton, was
                 launched at New York. It was designed by Robert Fulton.
               - 1863: The International Committee of the Red Cross was founded.
               - 1872: J.S. Risdon patented the metal windmill.
               - 1901: The man who assassinated President McKinley, Leon Czolgosz,
                 was electrocuted.
               - 1904: The first intercity trucking service began operating.

               - 1969: The U.S. Supreme Court ordered an immediate end to school
                 desegregation.
               - 1974: President Ford signed into law a bill banning discrimination
                 on the basis of sex or marital status in credit applications.
