                - 1492: Christopher Columbus discovered Cuba and claimed it in the
                  name of Spain.
                - 1636: Harvard College was founded at Cambridge, Mass.
                - 1746: The Peruvian cities of Lima and Callao were demolished by an
                  earthquake, killing at least 18,000.
                - 1776: In White Plains, N.Y., British troops under Howe defeated
                  Washington.
                - 1790: New York relinquished its claim to Vermont for $30,000.
                - 1793: Eli Whitney applied for a patent for his cotton gin.
                - 1867: Maimonides College in Pennsylvania became the first Jewish
                  college in the U.S.
                - 1886: The Statue of Liberty, a gift from France designed by Auguste
                  Bartholdi, was dedicated by President Grover Cleveland.
                - 1893: Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky conducted the first performance of
                  his "Symphony No. 6 in B minor, "Pathetique."
                - 1919: The Volstead Prohibition Act was passed by the Congress,
                  prohibiting the sale of drink containing more than .5 percent
                  of alcohol.
                - 1922: Fascist Blackshirts began a march on Rome from Naples, which
                  led two days later to the formation of a government led by Benito
                  Mussolini.
                - 1949: Eugenie Anderson became the first woman U.S. ambassador when
                  she was appointed ambassador to Denmark.
                - 1954: Ernest Hemingway won the Nobel prize for literature.
                - 1962: The Cuban missile crisis effectively ended when Soviet leader
                  Khrushchev announced that its missiles would be dismantled and
                  returned to the U.S.S.R. President Kennedy immediately replied that
                  the U.S. would lift its blockade of Cuba.
                - 1981: A Soviet Whiskey-class submarine armed with nuclear weapons
                  ran aground in Swedish waters. The vessel was released Nov. 6 after
                  protests to the U.S.S.R.
                - 1997: Zambian President Frederick Chiluba survived a coup attempt by
                  junior military officers who said they were acting against
                  corruption and criminality in the government.
