                  U.S. diplomat Henry Kissinger and Vietnam's Le Duc Tho won the
                  Nobel Peace Prize (Le Duc Tho refused the award).
                - 1978: Cardinal Karol Wojtyla was elected by the College of
                  Cardinals to be the new pope of the Roman Catholic Church, taking
                  the name John Paul II.
                - 1981: Actor William Holden died at age 63 after splitting his head
                  open while intoxicated.
                - 1984: Anglican Bishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa was awarded the
                  Nobel Peace Prize. A baboon heart was transplanted into a
                  15-day-old baby girl.
