                - 1911: Chinese nationalist leader Sun Yat Sen proclaimed a Republic
                  at Wuchang and began the revolution which overthrew the Manchu
                  dynasty.
                - 1933: The first synthetic detergent, Dreft by Procter & Gamble,
                  went on sale.
                - 1935: "Porgy and Bess," by George Gershwin had its New York
                  premiere.
                - 1943: Chiang Kai-shek was sworn in as the president of China.
                - 1954: Ho Chi Minh entered Hanoi after French troops pulled out of
                  the city.
                - 1959: Pan American World Airways inaugurated the first
                  round-the-world passenger air service.
                - 1965: The "Vinland Map" was introduced by Yale University as being
                  the first known map of America, drawn about 1440 by Norse explorer
                  Leif Eriksson.
                - 1973: U.S. Vice-President Spiro Agnew resigned after being charged
                  with tax evasion.
                - 1982: The United States imposed sanctions against Poland after the
                  Polish government banned the Solidarity trade union.
                - 1985: Actors Yul Brynner and Orson Welles died. Brynner died of
                  cancer at age 65; Welles died at age 70 of a heart attack.
                - 1994: Alfred G. Gilman and Martin Rodbell were awarded the Nobel
                  Prize in medicine.
                - 1995: Israel began its West Bank pullback and freed hundreds of
                  Palestinian prisoners under a deal with the Palestine Liberation
                  Organization.
                - 1995: Robert E. Lucas was awarded the Nobel Prize in economics.
