               - 1782: The United States and Britain signed preliminary peace
                 articles in Paris, ending the Revolutionary War.
               - 1803: Spain completed the process of ceding Louisiana to France.
               - 1804: The first U.S. Supreme Court justice to be impeached for
                 alleged political bias, Samuel Chase, went on trial.
               - 1866: Work began in Chicago on first U.S. underwater highway tunnel.
               - 1886: The first commercially successful AC electric power plant
                 opened in Buffalo.
               - 1887: The first softball game was played in Chicago. The game used a
                 broomstick for a bat and a boxing glove for a ball.
               - 1900: A German engineer patented front-wheel drive for automobiles.
               - 1924: Wireless transmission of photographs from London to New York
                 City by radio was first demonstrated by RCA.
               - 1940: Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz were married.

               - 1991: The first world championship of women's soccer was won by the
                 U.S., defeating Norway 2-1, in Guangzhou, China.
               - 1993: President Clinton signed the Brady Gun Control Bill
                 establishing a five-day waiting period and a background check for
                 the purchase of a gun.
