               - 1558: Following the death of Queen Mary, Elizabeth I ascended the
                 English throne.
               - 1755: King Louis XVIII Of France was born.
               - 1785: The Church of England was organized in New England.
               - 1800: Congress held its first session in Washington in the
                 partially completed Capitol building.
               - 1800: John Adams moves into the White House, making him the first
                 president to live there.
               - 1853: Street signs were authorized at San Francisco intersections.
               - 1863: Lincoln began the first draft of his Gettysburg Address.
               - 1869: The Suez Canal opened in Egypt, linking the Mediterranean and
                 the Red seas.
               - 1889: The Union Pacific Railroad Company began direct, daily
                 railroad service between Chicago and Portland, Ore., as well as
                 Chicago and San Francisco.
               - 1902: Eugene Paul Wigner, mathematician and physicist who played a

                 deficit and scored two touchdowns in the last 42 seconds to win,
                 43-32.
               - 1969: The strategic arms limitation (SALT) talks between the
                 United States and the Soviet Union began in Helsinki, Finland.
               - 1972: Juan Peron returned to Argentina.
               - 1973: President Nixon told Associated Press managing editors
                 meeting in Orlando, Fla., that "people have got to know whether or
                 not their president is a crook. Well, I'm not a crook."
               - 1991: The first TV condom ad aired on FOX-TV.
               - 1997: Egypt's biggest Islamic militant group, al-Gama'a al-Islamiya,
                 killed 58 foreign tourists and four Egyptians at the temples of
                 Luxor in their deadliest attack.
