- 1979: In Iran, the hostage crisis began when militants attacked the
U.S. Embassy in Tehran. Some hostages were released a few weeks
later, but 52 hostages were kept captive 444 days.
- 1980: Ronald Reagan was elected president, defeating President
Carter.
