               - 1783: The Continental Army was dissolved and George Washington made
                 his "Farewell Address to the Army."
               - 1867: The magazine "Harper's Bazaar" was published.
               - 1878: Edward Scripps and John Sweeney founded the Penny Press,
                 later renamed the Cleveland Press.
               - 1889: North and South Dakota entered the union as the 39th and 40th
                 states.
               - 1917: In World War I, the first U.S. soldiers were killed in
                 combat.
               - 1920: Warren Harding was elected the 29th president.
               - 1921: The National Birth Control League under Margaret Sanger
                 joined with the Voluntary Parenthood League under Mary Denetts and
                 formed the American Birth Control League.
               - 1926: The Air Commerce Act was passed.
               - 1931: Du Pont introduced synthetic rubber.
               - 1947: Howard Hughes flew his "Spruce Goose," a large wooden

               - 1962: At the end of the Cuban missile crisis, President Kennedy

               - 1963: In a military coup, South Vietnamese President Ngo Dihn Diem
                 was assassinated.
               - 1976: Jimmy Carter was elected president, the first candidate from
                 the Deep South since the Civil War to be elected. New Jersey
                 approved gambling for Atlantic City.
               - 1983: President Reagan established the third Monday of January as a
                 federal holiday in honor of slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin
                 Luther King Jr.
