- 1962: At the end of the Cuban missile crisis, President Kennedy
told the nation Russia was dismantling its missile bases in Cuba.
- 1963: In a military coup, South Vietnamese President Ngo Dihn Diem
was assassinated.
- 1976: Jimmy Carter was elected president, the first candidate from
the Deep South since the Civil War to be elected. New Jersey
approved gambling for Atlantic City.
- 1983: President Reagan established the third Monday of January as a
federal holiday in honor of slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr.
