              - In 1533, Pope Clement VII excommunicated England's King Henry
                VIII.
              - In 1767, John Quincy Adams, the sixth president of the United
                States, was born in Braintree, Mass.
              - In 1804, Vice President Aaron Burr mortally wounded former
                Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton in a pistol duel near
                Weehawken, N.J.
              - In 1864, Confederate forces led by General Jubal Early began an
                abortive invasion of Washington, D.C., turning back the next day.
              - In 1934, President Roosevelt became the first chief executive to
                travel through the Panama Canal.
              - In 1955, the U.S. Air Force Academy was dedicated at Lowry Air
                Base in Colorado.
              - In 1974, the House Judiciary Committee released volumes of
                evidence it had gathered in its Watergate inquiry.

                of international human rights observers. President Clinton, on his
                first official visit to Germany, urged his hosts to take on a
                stronger leadership role in global affairs. Shawn Eckardt was
                sentenced in Portland, Ore., to 18 months in prison for his role in
                the attack on figure skater Nancy Kerrigan.
              - One year ago: Air Force Lt. Michael Blassie, a casualty of the
                Vietnam War, was laid to rest near his Missouri home after the
                positive identification of his remains, which had been enshrined at
                the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington, Va.
