                 by his 9-month-old son King Henry VI.
               - 1842: Congress established the U.S. Naval Observatory.
               - 1881: The first lawn tennis championships started in Rhode Island.
               - 1888: The body of Mary Ann Nichols, the first victim of murderer
                 "Jack the Ripper," was found in London.
               - 1895: The first pro football game was played.
               - 1897: Thomas Edison patented his movie camera - the Kinetograph.
               - 1919: John Reed formed the American Communist Labor Party.
               - 1920: A Detroit radio station was first to broadcast a news
                 program on the air.
               - 1957: Malaysia became an independent Asian member of the British
                 Commonwealth.
               - 1965: Congress established the Department of Housing and Urban
                 Development.
               - 1975: Former Teamsters' president James Hoffa was reported missing.

               - 1990: East and West Germany signed a treaty to join their legal

               - 1994: The Irish Republican Army declared an unconditional end
                 to its 25-year war against British rule of Northern Ireland and
                 planned to switch its struggle for a united Ireland to the
                 conference table.
