                - 1565: The oldest city in the U.S., St. Augustine, Fla., was
                  established.
                - 1609: Henry Hudson, an English navigator, discovered and explored
                  Delaware Bay for the Netherlands.
                - 1619: Ferdinand II was elected Holy Roman Emperor. During his reign
                  the Thirty Years War started as a result of his attempts to
                  eradicate Protestantism.
                - 1830: The first locomotive built in the U.S., the "Tom Thumb," ran
                  from Baltimore to Ellicotts Mill.
                - 1837: Pharmacists John Lea and William Perrins began manufacturing
                  Worcester Sauce.
                - 1849: Venice under Daniele Manin finally surrendered to the
                  Austrians under Radetsky, the city having been under siege since
                  July 20 after proclaiming independence against Austrian rule.
                - 1850: Richard Wagner's opera "Lohengrin" premiered at Weimar,
                  Germany, under the direction of Franz Liszt.
                - 1867: The U.S. annexed the Midway Islands.
                - 1914: In World War I the battle of Heligoland Bight took place
                  between British and German ships in the North Sea. The Germans lost
                  four ships and 1,000 sailors; British casualties were 33 killed.
                - 1917: Ten suffragists picketing the White House were arrested.
                - 1922: The first ever radio advertisement, a 10-minute property
                  commercial by Queensboro Realty Corp., was broadcast by station
                  WEAF in New York.
                - 1943: In World War II in Denmark, a universal strike was declared
                  against the Nazi occupiers.
                - 1944: In World War II, the last German troops in Marseille
                  surrendered and Toulon was finally cleared of German troops.
                - 1963: Dr Martin Luther King delivered his "I have a dream" speech
                  to 200,000 civil rights demonstrators who had marched on Washington.
                - 1990: Iraq declared occupied Kuwait the 19th province of Iraq.
