                - 1693: Dom Perignon invented Champagne.
                - 1704: During the War of the Spanish Succession, a joint Anglo-Dutch
                  force attacked and captured the Spanish city of Gibraltar.
                - 1735: John Peter Zenger was acquitted of seditious libel in a case
                  that established the freedom of the press.
                - 1790: The Coast Guard began as a naval task force called the
                  Revenue Cutter Service. The government authorized the first bonds.
                - 1821: The Saturday Evening Post was first published.
                - 1855: John Bartlett published "Familiar Quotations."
                - 1862: The U.S. government collected its first income tax.
                - 1875: Hans Christian Anderson, author of "The Little Mermaid,"
                  "Fantasia" and others died at age 70 in Copenhagen.
                - 1892: Andrew and Abby Borden were axed to death in their Fall
                  River, Mass., home. Their daughter, Lizzie, was charged with the
                  murders, but was acquitted.
                - 1914: In World War I, Germany invaded Belgium and when London's
                  ultimatum to Berlin to withdraw expired at midnight, Britain
                  declared war on Germany. The United States declared neutrality.
                - 1916: Denmark ceded the Danish West Indies, including the Virgin
                  Islands, to the U.S. for $25 million.
                - 1944: After two years hiding in an Amsterdam back room, Anne Frank,
                  14, her sister, her parents and four other Jews were discovered
                  and arrested by the Gestapo. Her diary was found after the war.
                - 1962: Nelson Mandela was captured by South African police.
                - 1964: The bodies of three missing civil rights workers, Michael H.
                  Schwerner, Andrew Goodman and James E. Chaney, were discovered
                  in an earthen Mississippi dam.
                - 1972: Arthur Bremer was jailed for 63 years for shooting Alabama
                  Gov. George Wallace.
                - 1977: President Carter established the Department of Energy.
